Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): World’s Greatest Promise

Responding to the world's most critical development challenges and to the calls of civil society, 189 world leaders made this historic promise at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they signed onto the Millennium Declaration and agreed to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world’s poorest people. The world leaders had agreed to achieve the following consensus-driven 8 MDGs by 2015.

Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger
Achievement of universal primary education
Promotion of gender equality and women empowerment
Reduction in child mortality rates
Improvement in maternal healthcare
Continued fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Assurance of environmental sustainability
Realization of a Global Partnership for Development

Millennium Candle Campaign (MCC): A Global Call to Action
